About the Author[]

Background Information[]

The Bone Gnawers section details the Silver River pack traveling to Szeged from Madrid, Spain. Once there, Cries Havoc falls into a coma from an attack from the winged banes coming from the river. The pack has to protect him from further attacks from Flood Banes, but are also aided by the local Bone Gnawers. With a council of other local Garou, they discuss purifying the river and dam. Many of the local Garou refuse to help, with only Halászlé aiding the pack on their quest.

Once there, they enter the umbra, and come under attack by numerous Flood Banes. Carlita calls for help and ends up summoning Uktena which destroys the dam and Banes. Uktena then tells the third pack that they have both succeeded and failed at the same time. For while they have purified the dam, Jo’cllath’mattric is now fully free.

The Stargazers section, details Antonine’s past and current events, such as trying to figure out Mari’s condition and helping Cries Havoc. Cries Havoc eventually comes out of his coma with the aid of a spirit under Helios. However, he cannot remember his First Change.

Antonine seeks information on the Silver Thread and runs into a former friend who has become a Black Spiral Dancer. His friend challenges him to Witscraft, but Antonine discovers that his friend forgetting his past is similar to Cries Havoc’s condition. Knowing that the Wyrm can only suppress and not destroy, he cites the Elemental Mantras taught to those who were once part of the Sept of the Snow Leopard. His friend bows to him, but to the other Spirals that is a sign of weakness and attack. Which makes it able for Antonine to flee from them.

Antonine then comes across Arkady and they both discuss the Silver Thread/Silver Spiral.

Memorable Quotes[]

"God.
Damn.
Brittle.
Leaf." - Pgs. 31, 41, 50 and 129

“I saw it in a dream. A fish-spirit came to me and told me that ‘In the third pack, the balance will be upheld by the young.’”
“Don’t fuck with me. Something came to you in a dream?”
“Yes! I swear – and then when I heard Mother Eldridge and Claws-of-Vengeance talking about this Stargazer and Red Talon and their third pack, I knew that it was more than just a dream. It was a real prophecy. The fish-spirits – they’re servants of Uktena. Uktena itself is the patron of this third pack!”
“You’re walking dangerously close to blasphemy, Soon-to-be-One-Eye.”
“It’s true. I’m of Uktena’s tribe. I know what I’m talking about.”
“So how does it involve me?”
“The balance will be upheld by the young. You’re the youngest Garou I know, and you’re a Philodox. You’re the young and the balance in the fish-spirit’s message. It’s not like I could just tell you ‘I had a dream and a fish told me that you need to volunteer for something coming up soon.”
“You got that right.” - pg. 44

"There is that. But do me a favor.”
“What’s that?”
“Don’t do me any more favors.” - Pg. 46

Cries Havoc placed his hand on Carlita’s shoulder.
“Remember Uktena’s lesson. Don’t fight the current, but guide yourself through it, wherever it leads.”
“Yeah?” Carlita said. “But how do I keep from drowning?” - Pg. 72

Antonine hung his head in shame. Had he done the right thing? He could no longer suppress his sorrow and sobbed. A single tear ran down his cheek.
An unknown voice spoke from nearby: “Do you shed a tear for yourself or for fear that your friendship is at an end? Cry not, young Teardrop, for you have done well. He who can master his rage enough to evoke it when truly needed shows wisdom.” - Pg. 233

He could scarcely believe what he had seen. If true, it implied that the Black Spiral Dancers, rather than being merely corrupt and evil creatures, were once the heroic, would-be saviors of the Wyrm when it was still the force of Balance, before it became the Lord of Defilement. They had succumbed to the madness of the Weaver, and their minds were trapped in the endless labyrinth she had crafted around her prisoner. They now shared in the captive serpent’s corruption. - Pg. 251-252

Antonine again struggled to maintain a neutral composure. Here again seemed to be another clue – a great forgetting. Could it be the same as Cries Havoc’s? “You chose to forget your past? Or was it taken from you?”
“I chose to have it taken. I yielded it up to the Wyrm and it gladly devoured it. Enough of the past! You seek to stall, to eke out more heartbeats than you deserve. It is time we engaged in our contest, Please, Antonine, begin. How can you possibly convince me that the Stargazer way is greater than the Wyrm’s?” - Pg. 265-266

This was the great lie of the Wyrm: that it could not destroy, only suppress and corrupt. - Pg. 267

“But you were not alone. Let that be a lesson for your tribe, Stargazer. If you gaze too long within, you miss what’s going on without.” - Arkady, Pg. 280
