Imagine a vampire on sufficiently good terms with the Church to wander around in a Capuchin monk's robes in modern nights. Imagine a hood with a pair of glowing eyes on it, imagine that it is well-connected, powerful, low-generation and very private. Imagine that it has a soft spot in its heart for the new clan Giovanni.
Alright, imagining the last part is a large step, but whatever the case, the Giovanni have benefitted from books and information from the Capuchin ever since the diablerie of Cappadocius. The Capuchin approached the clan of death for knowledge of Necromancy, in exchange for which it offered access to hidden books in the Vatican library. The trade was mutually beneficial, and over the centuries, the Capuchin would appear with some new artifact or tidbit of information.
One tidbit was the location of the True Vessel and an implication that Claudius Giovanni had lost it while raiding Erciyes for information. The result was a gruesome death for Claudius Giovanni and a fresh corpse the Capuchin took away for his own purposes.
Exactly who the Capuchin is is open to wide debate. The most common candidate is Lazarus. They have similar portraits in their respective clanbooks, and both are survivors of the Giovanni purge. Japheth Cappadocius is a more remote possibility - largely supported by the biography of Unre in Children of the Night.
[edit] Background Information
The entry on the Capuchin from Clanbook: Giovanni consists of seven paragraphs. Taking the first letter of each paragraph spells out "LAZARUS."
