In Mage: The Ascension The Technocracy was largely treated as a force for evil, and there were no facilities for playing Technocracy characters until relatively late in the game. The original Splatbooks for the Technocracy included no facilities for generate Technocrat characters.

A vocal minority of Mage players was aggravated by this for years, partly because the Technocracy was (especially in the first edition) over the top and cartoonishly evil, partly because far more loathsome creatures (such as Tzimisce and Fomori) were playable, and partly because they were engineers themselves.

This changed somewhat with Mage: The Ascension (Revised Edition) and the Guide To The Technocracy and the corresponding Convention Book: Iteration X (Revised). However, editorial changes in the Mage line and the ending of the line with Ascension ended this.
