Robert Schroer is a moderate Republican from Colorado who became President of the United States in 2000 in the Trinity Universe.
Overview[]
Schroer was a virtual unknown when he launched his candidacy, but he edged out his more conservative opposition in the primaries and narrowly defeated Al Gore in the general election. His candidacy drove many of the more far-right elements out of the Republican Party.[1]
On March 30, 2002, CNN broke the story that Schroer had been involved in a six-year extra-marital affair with another man. While Schroer promptly admitted to the affair, the sordid reporting caused his approval ratings to plummet.[2] In 2004, he lost re-election to Lauren Pendleton of the Libertarian Party; analysts credit this outcome to voters being fed up with the two major parties after back-to-back sex scandals.[3] The scandal also further splintered the Republican Party, triggering the formation of the American Eagle Party, and subsequent Republican candidates tried to distance themselves from Shroer.[4]
Trivia[]
Schroer has certain similarities to John McCain, the dark horse Republican from a western state who seemed a shoo-in to win the nomination when Aberrant was published in 1999.
