pretentious: 1. marked by an unwarranted claim to importance or distinction. 2. ostentatious; intended to impress others. 3. demanding of skill or daring

Many White Wolf fans (and detractors) often use the word "pretentious" in reference to the World of Darkness games or the company itself, usually intending to mean some elitist quality. Although the first definition as mentioned above is close, the actual definition of pretentious has little to do with the usage common in the gamer lexicon.
