Mathieu Zweidler is the Proxy of the Vitakinetics, the Æsculapian Order, in the Trinity Universe.

Biography[]

Zweidler was born in Basel, Switzerland on June 2, 2063. He grew up in a wealthy family that nurtured his intellectual gifts; he entered medical school while still in his teens, and was making breakthroughs in non-invasive surgical techniques before he'd finished his residency. He could've joined any number of medical research ventures, but chose to follow his mentor, Abraham Montressor, back to Basel instead.

Montressor's self-named clinic opened in 2086, and Zweidler invested a significant amount in the practice considering his age and junior status. When Montressor died in 2088, he left his entire stake in the clinic to Zweidler, giving the younger man 75% control of the practice, while the other six partners split the remaining 25%. A drawn-out legal battle ensued over control of the clinic, with Zweidler and Hans Beitz siding against the other five partners. With the help of Zweidler's friend Pierce Monahan, they were able to oust the other doctors and assume total control of the clinic.[1]

In 2103, Zweidler took a sabbatical from the clinic due to unexplained hallucinations.[2] He had been chosen by the Doyen to become one of the Proxies. He traveled to Luna and underwent noetic surgery to become a potent vitakinetic, returning to Basel with the core of a Prometheus Chamber.[3] As Zweidler gained control of his new abilities, he began establishing the basis of the Æsculapian Order, bringing his confidants Beitz and Monahan into project almost immediately.[4]

Zweidler seemed to resent the burdens being a Proxy placed on him, though his sense of duty kept him from showing it. Together with S. K. Bhurano, he laid the foundations of modern noetic science, and the two of them worked together closely right up until the Chitra Bhanu purge. While Zweidler initially was skeptical of the accusations leveled against the quantakinetics, he came to support the purge whole-heartedly and without remorse.[5]

Zweidler is a hands-off administrator, but his strict rationality and attention to detail have colored the Æsculapians' operations, in particular the faction nearest to him in Basel. He is rather openly contemptuous of the Port-au-Prince faction, but will not exclude a powerful latent or skilled rex from the order just because of their ideology.[6] He would prefer to spend his days in the lab and leave the management of his order to his subordinates, but unfortuantely, Zweidler is a poor judge of character; the Huang-Marr Biorg Project grew under his nose, helmed by one of his oldest friends.[7]

Like most of the Proxies, Zweidler radiates a palpable aura of power; he almost subconsciously uses the Mentatis mode to sooth everyone around him. He is reserved to the point of coldness, and incredibly stubborn when provoked. When it comes to his research, he's a micromanager, but the interpersonal skills required for effective management bore him.[8] Zweidler has never married or had a long-term romantic relationship, though he is rumored to engage in more casual affairs with both men and women in his social circles.[9]
