For the Hunter: The Vigil compact of Martyrs, see Ahl al-Jabal.

Martyrs are one of the Hunter creeds that follow the virtue of Mercy. Like Defenders, they seek to protect mortals, but they do so by putting themselves at risk and sacrificing themselves. They feel they have been chosen to suffer the predations of monsters so that others may be free. They understand the emotions and motivations of compulsive predators, because they feel the same way. Martyrs tend to be miserable with their role, but know that if they pursue it, fewer others will have to share their fate. The Edges commonly granted to them include powers which aid others while harming the Martyr. They are often among the shortest-lived of hunters.

Some Martyrs have a special ability to share their strength with others, sustaining people in times of need at considerable expense to the self. Known as Communion, a ritual of some kind must be performed between the Martyr and the subject that involves some discomfort and sets the terms of the blessing. After a bond has been established, the subject is able to borrow Conviction in order to succeed in situations specified in the ritual.

Standard Edges[]

    • Demand: Martyrs are willing to exhaust themselves in a desperate bid to accomplish great deeds. They can perform an amazing feat of strength at the cost of their own health.
    • Project: A Martyr's determination practically exudes from their body when using this edge, a display that most monsters loathe to face, becoming uncertain or afraid to impede or attack them.

    • Witness: Allows a Martyr to recognize the nature of supernatural creatures in their presence, expanding their Second Sight. It also gives them a glimpse of their relationship with mankind.
    • Revelation: The Martyr senses the subject's thoughts and feelings at the forefront of their mind at the instant of the use, making eye contact with them. The creature is capable of glimpsing the user's thoughts as well. The hunter is at risk of being overwhelmed by the monster's hungers and passions.

    • Ravage: A gas pours from the hunter and travels where they gesture. Supernatural creatures react violently to it, as it seems to corrupt and decay their very bodies. Even intangible creatures aren't safe. Human targets will experience deep emotional trauma. The wielder of Ravage will get sick, having stomach pains, coughing and vomiting.
    • Inflict: Activating this edge turns a person's or monsters' violent acts back upon them, causing it to suffer the same harm it imposes. This power has no effect on ranged attacks.

    • Donate: The hunter blurs the line between themselves and others, becoming possible to lend their "self" to others for their use. They can lend an Attribute of their choice to any willing person they touch, for a limited period, and weakening the Martyr considerably during it.
    • Ordeal: A Martyr may heal other people by literally absorbing their injuries into themselves. This edge can also transfer mental damage, but the edge cannot be used to heal monsters, only of people and other imbued.

    • Payback : By locking their gaze with a supernatural enemy, they can impose human limitations upon them and rob them of their powers until they leave their presence. Only one power can be denied a creature at a time, and it cannot be assigned a weakness and be stripped of a power simultaneously.
    • Expiate: Through physical contact, the Martyr can rob a monster of its very nature by draining its supernatural essence and returning the creature to a possible natural state. In exchange, the Martyr will impose a terminal illness that grows worse each time they use Expiate.
