- N-Day. The research satellite Galatea explodes at 1218 GST, killing its crew and raining quantum-charged radioactives into the jet stream. At 1531 EST, the first publicly-known nova, Randel "The Fireman" Portman, erupts while fighting a school-bus fire in New York.[4][5][6][7]
- Louis M. Freeman manifests his plasma powers at this time, fleeing police and National Guard alike.[2]

- Humanity makes its first contact with the Qin when a Chinese explorer intercepts a transmission of Qin radio static[10]. A Chinese deep-space explorer is later psi-jumped to the Qin's home system, where it encounters a patrol craft. Initial interactions are cautious, but things go well.[11][12][13][14] Orgotek promotes relations with the Qin almost immediately, applying Qin biotech theory to human biotech devices.[15]
