When the Shan'iatu developed the Rite of Return it was to place souls before the 42 Judges of Duat for their judgement. Many were destroyed in the process, many others driven insane, but those who survived made their decree and were reborn as the Arisen.

Each Judge has a defining Pillar which also determines the decree of its pledges, a bestowed Affinity, and favored Affinities that are easier for its followers to manifest. Once pledged to a Judge, a mummy follows whatever purpose that Judge sets before them during its times of Descent. Judges sometimes visit the mummy in visions to give it direction, but these are terrible and frightening events.
