Like all vampires of his bloodline, LA's Malkavian primogen is, or was, hopelessly insane. Doctor Alistair Grout hid his madness well, however. To hear him tell it he was more rational than any other undead in his city.
His stolid facade was but the thinnest veneer. As you explore Grout's mansion you find a set of dictaphones with tapes of the primogen's private musings. As you listen to each recording you discover the madman's lunacy ran as deep as the dungeons below his elegant manor. Depression, paranoia, delusion, hallucination, the vilest sadism, and tragic devotion: these themes defined his tenure as a scion of California's nocturnal nobility.
This sequence is an example of the game's fluid narrative transitions between grimy gutters and ribald humor to architectural elegance and philosophical grace. This breadth of storytelling made VTMB unique among desktop RPGs.
