Caiphas Smith is a Vampire hunter and the most powerful mortal hunter listed in the Vampire books. A New England Puritan from the 18th century, Smith is driven by religious fury to hunt down and eliminate vampires, aided by his burning faith (under the original Faith rules, his rating is over six, high enough to orchestrate minor miracles), extensive knowledge and a collection of hedge magic spells he has picked up over the centuries. Moreover, he is a skilled shot with a crossbow and an able melee fighter, having staked his first Kindred as a boy when it tried to attack him in a tool shed. Smith is an Independent Ghoul who uses Vampire blood from his kills to survive as well as further his work through low-level Ghoul disciplines such as Potence. He is considered extreme even by other hunters (notably Sullivan Dane).
