Azar was the supreme god and patron of the Nameless Empire, roughly equivalent to Osiris in the later Egyptian pantheon.

Azar is described as a being with green skin and golden eyes. He was the god who taught the Shan'iatu about the Law, so that they in turn could teach and protect mortals. However, he either could not or would not explain why humans could potentially ascend to A'aru but the Shan'iatu could not. Ammut eventually corrupted the Shan'iatu, who decided to murder Azar in order to install him as the king of Duat, with authority above even the Judges. They believed Azar would then summon them and raise them up over the Judges in gratitude.

The Shan'iatu butchered Azar into 43 pieces, and cast aside his phallus to ensure he would always retain a link to the material world. Then they fed the rest to Aset, a mortal woman, since the soul of a god would not normally go to Duat. Once she had consumed all of Azar's remains, the Shan'iatu ritually murdered her, which sent both her and Azar into Duat. There, the gods decided that Anpu should step down as the ruler of Duat and let Azar take his place. Azar in turn made Aset his queen in the underworld.
